Who Needs a Massage?

Winter conditioning started last week, and many of our kids are already complaining of soreness. That's to be expected now and throughout the season. Here's one way to ease their aches and pains…or yours.

Coach Sandy Padjen (HRHS Distance Coach and Registered Massage Therapist) is offering massages at a discounted rate AND donating 30% of the cost to HRHS Track.

Take a look at the information below for details, and contact Coach Padjen to schedule a massage or purchase a gift certificate. She will bring all the equipment to do a sports massage or other body work in the comfort and convenience of your home. She is also available to bring chair and/or table massages to your place of business as a part of your health and wellness program or just as a holiday treat for your staff. Winter Conditioning Starts Monday

Winter Conditioning for HRHS Track and Field starts the Monday after Thanksgiving (11/26/12). Coaches and athletes will meet in the Commons after school (by 3:10 p.m.).

Our season is short, and winter conditioning is a critical component of preparing our athletes to hit the ground running and be as competitive as possible when meets begin in March. If you know of students who are freshmen, new to HRHS, or interested in coming out for track for the first time, please forward this email to them and invite them to join us. See you Monday!

Hurdler Amy Chen Is a 36-er

Congratulations to Amy Chen, who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT! Her perfect score puts her in an elite group of students in the state and country -- in Colorado only 17 of the 53,000 students who took the ACT achieved a perfect score.

Amy excels in many areas outside the classroom too. We look forward to seeing her back on the track soon!

Coach Krauss Named Volleyball Coach of the Year

He's not just a great track coach!

HRHS Track Boosters and athletes congratulate Coach Lou Krauss on being named the 2012 Continental League Coach of the Year for volleyball.

Cheer on the Falcons as Coach Krauss leads them in one more game this season, tomorrow (Saturday, November 10) at the Denver Coliseum, as the HRHS Volleyball team takes on Doherty in the State Volleyball Tournament. Game times are based on completion time of the previous match, but HRHS is expected to begin play around 9:30-10:00 a.m. See the rotating banner on the HRHS Website for details on cost.

Congratulations, Coach Krauss!

Athletic Punch Cards Still Available

The HRHS Athletic Department is offering a punchcard good for 10 admissions to any home game in any sport all year long for only $40. At $4 per game, that's a 20% savings over buying your tickets at the door for a total of $10 savings over the 10 admissions on the punchcard.

If you purchase your punchcard through HRHS Track the entire $40 is credited to the Track and Field program for the 2013 season. We have already raised $200 for Track and Field through punchcard sales, and we hope to add to that number!

Punchcards are good for any home game in any sport all year long. Just this Fall, we have 11 more home Football, Volleyball, Softball, and Boys Soccer matches. There are a total of 13 home Boys and Girls Basketball games scheduled for this season. And we don't even have schedules yet for all the Spring sports, including Baseball, Girls Soccer, Boys Lacrosse and Girls Tennis. Maybe you need two punchcards!

Contact Kim Turnage if you have questions or want to purchase a punch card (or 2). Tell your friends and neighbors, too! Every card our team sells adds $40 to our program's funding for the coming season.

Time for Track Already?

Fall Conditioning

Fall Conditioning for HRHS Track started this week. Athletes meet after school in the weight room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from about 3:00-4:00 p.m. There is no cost to participate, and athletes are encouraged to come whenever they can, even if they can't make it for every workout. Hope to see you there!

HRHS Athletic Punch Cards: Be a Fan, Save $10, AND Double Your Money

Sounds too good to be true but it's not!
  • Be a Fan!  You know you love the Falcons, so come out and support ANY OR ALL of our teams at home games all year long ... AND save $10.

  • Save $10!   Instead of buying a ticket at the door, buy an Athletic Punch Card from HRHS Track. Cards have 10 punches, each good for admission to any HRHS home game (at HRHS or Shea Stadium), for any sport, anytime during the 2012-2013 school year. You pay $40 ($4 per game) instead of the $5 admission you would pay for each event at the gate. There's your $10 bucks. Buy more cards....save more Alexander Hamiltons!

  • AND Double Your Money??  Yep! Because the entire $40 cost of each card you purchase from HRHS Track is credited directly to the HRHS Track and Field program for the coming season.
It's a Win-Win-Win! Contact Kim Turnage if you have questions or want to purchase a punch card (or 2....or 10). Tell your friends and neighbors, too! Every card our team sells adds $40 to our program's funding for the coming season.

Falcon Tracksters at CSU

Even if you were rooting for CU last weekend, maybe at least a small part of you can celebrate CSU's victory. Three HRHS Track alumni (Joe Hansley, Joe Caprioglio and Richard Mbugua) are playing football for CSU this year. Caprioglio, who placed 5th in shot put at State for HRHS a few years ago, started at tackle, and Hansley scored a touchdown in his first game as a Ram. Mbugua is a walk-on who we hope to see more of in the coming years. Go Falcons (we know you're Rams now too, but once a Falcon, always a Falcon)!

Personal Fundraising Opportunities for Stanford Meet

As the 2012 season winds down, we encourage you to start planning for next season. Each year, HRHS Track offers varsity athletes whose performances qualify the opportunity to travel to Palo Alto, CA for the Stanford Invitational. (Note: unlike our other meets, this meet is not an all-comer meet; it has minimum qualifying requirements for each event). This year the cost of the trip to each athlete was $475.

If you think your athlete may want to travel to Stanford next season or in a subsequent season, you may want to take advantage of one or both of these fundraising opportunities.

1.  King Sooper Cards (earn 5% of everything you spend)
2. Run Concessions at Sports Authority at a June 9 Zoom Track Meet (earn up to $250 in one day)

Here are the details for each:

King Sooper Cards
We can provide you with a trackable KS Gift Card. Every time you reload the card, 5% of what you put on it goes into your athlete's designated travel fund in the HRHS Booster account. Buy groceries, gas, other gift cards, plants and flowers, even Starbucks inside the store with your KS gift card, and 5% of everything you spend gets tucked away into your child's account. It's EASY! Some athletes covered well over half their travel costs with their KS balances this year. We will have KS cards available at the Team Celebration on May 20 if you would like to start personal fundraising now.

Concessions
Athletes working with a parent/guardian would be eligible to earn travel funds for managing and running concessions during a June 9 track meet at Sports Authority. A minimum of 4 athlete/parent teams  (4 people in the a.m., 8 people in overlapping lunch shift, 4 people in the p.m.) would need to commit to participating. Parents who participate would be completely responsible for managing and staffing the concessions for the meet. At least one parent would need to volunteer to be the point person, and all parents who participate would need to complete a manager training with Dawn Spencer, Manager of DCSD Concessions prior to June 9.

Proceeds would  be divided evenly among the athlete/parent teams and deposited into the Booster travel account, earmarked for that athlete. With an estimated draw of $1000 divided among 4 athletes, that would be $250 each, more than half of this year's expenses per athlete in one day's work. For 6 hours work, each parent/athlete team would earn about $40 per hour or $20 per hour per person. Not a bad return for their time.

If an athlete participates in this as a fundraiser and for whatever reason does not go to Stanford before he or she leaves the HRHS track program, his/her designated funds will go into a travel scholarship fund.

This opportunity is currently being considered by Rock Canyon. If they decline this opportunity, HRHS is next in line to accept it, and we would need to accept by early next week or it will go to the next in line. If you would be interested in this personal fundraising opportunity, email Kim Turnage ASAP.

HRHS State Hopefuls

We're down to two meets left in the 2012 track season -- this weekend's Continental Conference Championship and next weekend's Colorado State Meet. With one more qualifying meet left in the season (our Conference Championship), here are your Highlands Ranch High School track and field athletes with marks that place them in the Top 25 in their events among 5A competitors. The top 18 athletes in each division qualify for the state meet so we'll be cheering for as many of those athletes as possible to move into or stay in the Top 18 this week. (Check out our FAQ's article from earlier in the season if you have questions or to see how much some of these marks have improved since the beginning of the season.)

With one qualifier to go, it's a game of fractions of inches and seconds. Here are your Falcon State Hopefuls for 2012. Best of luck to all our athletes competing this week as they strive to earn new personal bests and state meet berths!

Conference Championship Schedule

Hot off the presses and straight to your inbox, here's the schedule for this week's 2012 Continental League Conference Championship Meet. This is our last state qualifying meet of the season. The Thursday/Saturday (no Friday) format is unique to our season and gives our athletes whose events fall on both days plenty of time to recover in between.

Click here for the schedule and watch for further meet details from the Coaches in a separate email.

So close on the heels of the volunteer AWESOMENESS demonstrated by HRHS parents this weekend, we hate to ask again....but we must. Each school provides some volunteers so no school has to provide them all. This year, HRHS is responsible for the following:

  • (3) Exchange Zone Judges for the Girls Sprint Medley Relay on Thursday (report by 2:45 pm, done by 3:15)
  • 100/110 Hurdles Crew on Thursday (3:30-4:15)
  • 300 Hurdles Crew on Saturday (11:40-12:20)
If you will be at the meet at any of these times and willing to assist, please email Coach Padjen for further information.

Go Falcons!

Thank You and Congratulations!

Thank you and congratulations to all the coaches, volunteers, and athletes who made our 2nd Annual Highlands Ranch Memorial Meet a great success this weekend (with a special shout-out for Lori Schofield, who coordinated all our volunteers!). We couldn't have ordered better weather. Our team represented well at the meet. We ran very nearly on schedule. We left the stadium spotlessly clean.

And we couldn't have made it all happen without everyone's help! Go Falcons!

No new pictures this week. We were all too busy making things run! But meet results are posted on MileSplit. Click here to see them.

Also click here for the results from Thursday's Frosh/Soph League Championship and check the Sports section of your May 3 Highlands Ranch Herald for an article reviewing Highlands Ranch teams' performances  in the Liberty Bell Invite and highlighting several HRHS athletes. Click here to see a scanned copy.

We're down to two meets left in the season -- Conference Championship next weekend and the State Meet May 17-19. Stay tuned this week for a State Meet preview, with information on HRHS's State Meet hopefuls and where they stand in the rankings with only one more qualifying meet remaining.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our End of Year Team Celebration on May 20 @ 4pm.

Photo Extravaganza

We've added lots of new pictures to our web albums this weekend, including a couple hundred JV Meet photos. Due to an uploading glitch last week, lots of Horizon Invite photos did not initially get added to our album; they are now up. We've also added albums for the Stanford meet and last week's Mullen meet. Here are links to all of them. Also remember you can always find links to photos and results from individual meets on the right column of our webpage.

Meet Schedule Changes and Parents-Coaches Social

Mullen Schedule

Our varsity competes at the Mullen Runner's Roost Invitational this Saturday. Click here for a printable pdf of the meet schedule. Also, please note the new location for this meet at Mullen High School (3601 S Lowell Blvd, Denver).

Horizon Pre-Prom Invite

Horizon has moved the start time for our varsity meet on Wednesday, April 18th to 1:30 p.m. Please note this earlier start. The meet will be held at Horizon High School (5321 E 136th Ave, Thornton), which is also a change from our original schedule.

Parents-Coaches Social

Track meets are busy and spread out, and our JV and Varsity athletes compete on different days in different venues, all of which makes it hard for parents to connect with each other and with coaches.

We hope you'll join us for a totally casual (yes, you can come from the meet!) Parents-Coaches Social hosted by Kim and Rick Turnage (8656 Forrest Drive) on Friday, April 20 starting at 7pm.

Please email Kim to RSVP. Beverages will be provided. Bring your favorite appetizer or dessert to share.

We Need You!

The 2nd Annual Highlands Ranch Memorial Meet, hosted by HRHS, is only a few weeks away on May 5. Our meet showcases the quality of our program and everything HRHS does to area schools and spectators. It's also our biggest fundraising opportunity. Last year, we raised significant funds to support our program, and coaches from 14 schools raved about the quality of our meet. WE NEED YOU to make this year's meet even better.

Here are two ways you can help:
  • Volunteer to staff one of over 50 positions at the meet, from officiating events, manning wind gauges, and distributing awards (don't worry -- we'll teach you all you need to know) to staffing concessions stands, grilling burgers and brats, and hosting an awesome lunch spread for coaches. Click here to see the slots that are still available and sign up for your favorite before it's gone! (Just add your name and contact info to the slot and it will be automatically saved. Notice we are entering phone numbers and emails in ways that make them difficult for spammers to crawl.)
    • Any parents out there who pole vaulted back in the day? We are especially in need of someone to be a head official for boys and girls pole vault.
  • Invite people to advertise in our meet program. Our meet is our biggest team fundraising opportunity, and a huge percentage of proceeds from ads we sell for our program goes directly to HRHS Track and Field. Click here for a packet you can print and use to invite friends and service providers to advertise in our program (think about your physician, dentist, orthodontist, plumber, realtor, hairstylist, friends who own local businesses, etc....you may also choose to purchase an ad to highlight your son or daughter.) The program will be seen by over 500 people on the day of our meet and advertisers' business names will also be broadcast over the loudspeakers throughout the meet.

Pictured below are a couple of examples of ads from last year, which are also included in your packet. (Note that the sample ads were scanned from last year. Actual program print quality will be much higher. Go Falcons! personal ad is an example of a full page ad. Anthony's ad is a 1/2 page. Paul M. Wagennar, DDS and Welcome Home Design ads are examples of 1/4 page ads). Go ahead and click on over there to print your packet. Ads are due by April 20 to allow for printing deadlines.

Questions? Contact Coach Padjen.

FAQ on State Leaderboards

If you're new to high school track and field (or maybe even if you're not), you might be wondering what the big deal is with state leaderboards.  Here's a little FAQ.

Q: Why do state rankings matter?
A: The top 18 performers in each event in each division qualify for the Colorado State Meet in May

Q: What division is HRHS in?
A: Highlands Ranch High School is a Colorado Division 5A school. Championships are contested separately for each division.

Q: My athlete has a better mark than the one listed for him or her on the MaxPreps and MileSplit leaderboards. Why is the better mark not listed?
A: For some events (long jump, triple jump, 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles, 110m high hurdles) wind matters, and athletes need to achieve wind-legal marks (trailing wind readings of +2.0 or lower) to qualify for the state meet. Only wind-legal marks will be listed on leaderboards

Q: MaxPreps vs. MileSplit?
Colorado Track XC (MileSplit) provides local coverage of meets (including photos and articles, some of which are available by subscription only), posts individual meet results, and maintains event leaderboards that can be searched and cut multiple ways (by grade, separated by division or not, etc.). MaxPreps maintains the official CHSSA leaderboards for state rankings. Links to leaderboards on MaxPreps are provided under Useful Links in the right sidebar on our homepage.

Sabercat Invitational Meet Results and Photos

Awesome weekend weather!
What beautiful days for our meets this weekend! On Thursday, JV competed at ThunderRidge, and on Saturday, Varsity competed at the Sabercat Invitational at Sports Authority Stadium. Click here to see complete results from the Sabercat Invitational.

To see individual leaderboards for the state by event, click here for girls and here for boys. (Please note: only wind-legal times and distances are listed on the leaderboards, and many of our results from this weekend's meet were not wind-legal). Top 18 in each event at the end of the year qualify for the State Meet. You can always find links to results sites under Useful Links in the right sidebar of our home page.

Photos from this week's varsity meet are available here. All our photos are provided by parents, and we welcome all submissions! JV parents, we would love to post more JV meet pictures! Please contact Kim Turnage for information on how you can upload photos to our web albums.

Enjoy Spring Break!

We Need You on May 5!
Last year, coaches from 14 schools raved about the quality of the meet sponsored by HRHS. Our meet this year is on May 5, and we need the help of all parents to make this year's meet even better (and more fun) than last year's! We need parents to officiate events and staff concessions. No experience needed. We'll teach you all you need to know. And we can't do it without you! Click here to see the volunteer slots that are still available and sign up online (just fill in your name and contact information in the slot next to the job you want to do). Need more information? Contact Lori Schofield, Kim Turnage, or Jim Kientz.

ThunderRidge Invitational Results and Photos

Congratulations to our athletes and coaches on this week's meet performances! JV competed at Rock Canyon last week, and our Varsity Boys and Girls each placed 3rd in Saturday's ThunderRidge Invitational. Click here to see complete results from the ThunderRidge Invitational.

Special congratulations to Cody Petrick (400 meter - 49.0) and Connor Turnage (triple jump - 45'6"), whose performances this weekend placed them among MileSplit's US Second Team Elite performers. Click here to see individual leaderboards for the state by event (please note: only wind-legal times and distances are listed on the leaderboards, and many of our results from this weekend's meet were not wind-legal). Top 18 in each event at the end of the year qualify for the State Meet. You can always find links to results sites on our Useful Links in the right sidebar.

Photos from this week's varsity meet are available here. All our photos are provided by parents, and we welcome all submissions! JV parents, we could really use your help to post more JV meet pictures! Please contact Kim Turnage for information on how you can upload photos to our web albums.

We have many fewer photos of Friday's JV meet (click here to see them) and would love to have more!

If you have photos of this weekend's meets to share (or would like to share your photos of upcoming meets), please email Kim Turnage for details on how to do that.

Watch for the email on Thursday from the Coaches, which will include directions, meet schedules, and all the information you need for this week's meets.

Individual results are not available online for Saturday's Varsity Conference Relays because all events were relays. Next week we'll send you a link to see individual results along with links to meet photos.

Track Parent Meeting Recap

We had our biggest Parent Meeting turnout ever to kick off the 2012 season! Thanks to all who attended! We covered a LOT of information. Here are some highlights and reminders:

  • Shoe Night @ Runners Roost in Lone Tree Wednesday, March 7 starting @ 5:30 -- discounts on shoes for our athletes.

  • Our first meets are THIS WEEK. Athletes are expected to stay and cheer on their teammates until the end of the meet.
    • JV at ThunderRidge Friday @ 3:30 pm - Athletes ride the bus there and need parents to drive them home.
      • (DIRECTIONS:  North on University; West on Wildcat Reserve Pkwy, South to School -- NOTE: Several miles past Mountain Vista HS)
    • Varsity at Sports Authority Stadium Saturday -- Field Events start at 8:30, Running Events start at 9:00. Arrive one hour before start time. No bus.
      • (DIRECTIONS: East on Lincoln Avenue (continue past I-25) - Turn South on Chambers).
    • HRHS is responsible for filling a total of 4 volunteer slots at Saturday's meet for the shot put and discus events -- 2 slots are from 9am-noon; 2 are from noon-3pm. This is a great opportunity for athletes who are new to our program to team up with a parent to cover one of the time slots and get a taste of what a varsity level competition looks like! Contact Jim Kientz to sign up.

  • Review our 2012 Team Handbook with your athlete.
    • Pay special attention to nutrition tips, ideas for eating at meets, and tips for how to be a supportive parent for your track athlete.
    • Please print out and sign the final page (Covenant) and have your athlete bring it to his or her coach at practice this week.

  • Join our Booster Club! Dues are $60 and 100% helps us provide equipment, uniforms,  2 coaches' salaries, and other program needs. Click here to give online through PayPal (you can pay with a credit card if you don't have a PayPal account).

  • Get your gear on! On that same link (go on....click over there) you can see all our Spirit Gear. Order and pay online, and we'll deliver items to your athlete at practice. If you've recently found new HR Track gear in your athlete's dirty laundry, he or she has brought home gear on an IOU. We'll be in touch soon via individual emails to help you settle up on that.

  • Our first Team Pasta Dinner is scheduled for March 16 @ 6:15pm. We have co-hosts signed up to help but still need a host home. Parents of returning athletes, please consider hosting this fun team building event for our athletes. Contact Jim Kientz to sign up for this date or check on other open dates.

  • Our athletes will be practicing over Spring Break every weekday morning 10am - noon. If your athlete will be leaving town for the break, he or she should see the coach for workouts.

  • Finally, mark your calendar now for May 5, the Highlands Ranch Memorial Track Meet hosted by our team. Last year, coaches from 14 schools raved about the quality of our meet, and our parent volunteers were the reason the meet was so incredible. This year the meet will be even bigger, and we need your help to make it even better. Watch for details on how you can get involved.

Parents, thanks for all you do to support your athletes' participation in HRHS Track! Please let us know if you have questions or need information.
