Spring Break in Texas and Fundraising Opportunities

*Read all the way to the bottom for a new individual fundraising opportunity that you'll need to act on right away if you're interested!

Once again this year, the HRHS Varsity Track team will compete in Austin, Texas during the last weekend of Spring Break (March 28-29). Specifics for travel will be determined at a later date, but we will likely fly out on March 27 and return on March 30.

All Varsity athletes who go on the trip will be able to compete in the South Austin Relays on March 28. The South Austin Relays is a high school meet, and it is a great chance for our athletes to see strong competition in what is typically much warmer weather than we have here at home.

The Texas Relays are on the same weekend at the University of Texas at Austin. This is a national meet for elite high school and college athletes. Athletes must meet qualifying marks to participate in the Texas Relays, and those who do are invited by Texas Relays officials to compete in the meet. Some of our athletes may qualify, but it is unlikely that all will. Those who don't compete will have the opportunity to watch some of the best track and field competitors in the country!

Cost will be $500 per athlete, which includes airfare, ground transportation in Austin, lodging, and most meals.

TWO WAYS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR YOUR TRIP:

  • Sell Falcon Cards: HRHS Football Boosters have 130 Falcon Cards left from their Fall fundraiser. Cards sell for $25. For every card sold, you will have $12.50 credited to your individual trip costs (the remaining $12.50 stays with the football program). There is no upfront cost or obligation. Check out Falcon Cards, sell as many as you can, and return the money and any unsold cards. Email us at hrhstrack@gmail.com for more information or to get cards. (This has been offered as a fundraiser just today to all HRHS clubs. If you want to get in on this, ACT FAST!! Cards may not be available if you wait too long!)

Congratulations from HRHS Track go out to:

  • Garrett Wilson (2011 Varsity Track Captain) whose 15th place finish at the Division 2 National Championship Cross Country Meet helped Western State finish 4th in the nation. Once a Falcon, always a Falcon!

Fundraising for HRHS Track Travel

For the past several years, our Varsity track athletes have had the opportunity to travel with coaches to a warmer destination for a meet over Spring Break. This gives our athletes a chance to bond as a team and to compete in much more favorable conditions against a much wider array of talent than we see at home at that time of year.

HRHS Track Boosters offer and administer King Soopers cards to help individual athletes fund their travel costs. If you want to travel with the team this year or in a subsequent season, it's never too early to start raising funds with a King Soopers account. Here's how it works:

We have $5 KS Gift Cards that KS will track for fundraising purposes. Purchase your card from HRHS Track Boosters, and every time you reload the card at Kin Soopers, 5% of what you put on it goes into your athlete's designated travel fund in the HRHS Booster account. Buy groceries, gas, plants and flowers, even Starbucks inside the store with your KS gift card, and 5% of everything you spend gets tucked away into your student's account. When it runs out, reload it again and again. (Note: KS stops tracking cards that have a zero balance for more than 90 days so be sure to keep at least a few dollars on it all the time.)

It's EASY and the funds add up fast! Buy extra cards for family, friends and neighbors who are willing to use them to help with your fundraising goals.  Some athletes have covered 100% of their travel costs with their KS balances.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:
IRS Regulations and District Policy are clear that fundraising must be for a specific purpose and belongs to the organization not to the individual. The KS Gift Card program for HRHS Track is for travel expenses related to our team's Spring Break meet. We are allowed to track individual fundraising through the KS program and apply funds raised to individual expenses. However, if an athlete participates in the KS Gift Card Program and for whatever reason does not use the funds raised toward meet travel expenses before he or she leaves the HRHS Track program, his/her designated funds must stay with the program and will go into a travel scholarship fund for HRHS Track.

State Meet Results and Photos: Day 3

Saturday was another great day at the track for HRHS!

We started the day off with a State Championship for Connor Turnage in the Triple Jump.

Connor’s winning jump of 48’ 8.5 was only ¼” short of his PR.
Congratulations, Connor!

Saturday afternoon, we wound down this track season with one more race – the Boys 4x100 Relay (Jason Phou, Connor Turnage, Eric Dynes, Jalen Kittrell).

HRHS finished 7th with a time of 42.92 -- one of only two races under 43.0 all season--the first one qualified them for the final. This team of one sophomore and three juniors is already talking about what they want to bring to the State Meet next year!

Click here for complete results. Click here for all the Day 3 photos.

Today we close the books on the 2103 season, and it’s been a fantastic year for HRHS Track. We’re looking forward to celebrating all our athletes’ achievements tomorrow, Sunday May 19 @ 4pm in the HRHS Commons.

All JV and Varsity athletes who completed the season with us are invited.

  • Last names A-M bring an appetizer and N-Z bring a dessert to share.
  • If you have not yet turned in your uniform, Sunday is the day!
  • We hope to have a great turnout on Sunday to celebrate the season’s accomplishments!

State Meet Results and Photos: Day 2

Day 2 at the 2013 State Meet was a little more spread out for HRHS but no less exciting.

The morning started at 9:30 with our Girls and Boys 4x100 Relay prelims. HRHS was one of only 8 teams to qualify 4x100 Relay teams for both Boys and Girls.

Our Girls 4x100 Relay (Alanis Dynes, Aaliyah Shumpert, CC Morgan, Shayli Siegfreid) improved from their 17th seed to place 12th in the prelims with a season best time of 50.12

Our Boys 4x100 Relay (Jason Phou, Connor Turnage, Eric Dynes, Jalen Kittrell) also ran a new season best time of 42.78 and placed 6th in the prelims. They qualified for the finals and get to compete in the finals on Saturday at 3:35 pm.

Andrew Bauer scored another medal and another PR, this time in the Paralympic 200 meters, with a time of 46.16, bettering his previous personal best by 4 seconds.

Macy Kreutz placed 5th in the 800 meters with a new PR of 2:14.91, bettering her previous PR by almost 2 seconds.

Our Boys 4x200 Relay (Jason Phou, Eric Dynes, Josh Kolber, Jalen Kittrell) placed 7th in the finals today with a time of 1:29.69 and got to stand on the podium to get their medals.

Our Girls 4x400 Relay (Taylor Schofield, Takiyah Shumpert, Morgan Krusoe, Macy Kreutz) maintained their seed, finishing 15th in 4:10.82. One was injured, two were sick this week, and the 4th ran a PR today. Next year they're all coming back for a rematch!

Click here for full results from Day 2. All our photos from Day 2 are here.

Tomorrow is the last day of the 2013 State Meet. Here's our schedule:

8:30 AM         BOYS TRIPLE JUMP – Connor Turnage
3:35 PM          BOYS 4 X 100 FINAL

Be sure to join us on Sunday at 4pm in the HRHS Commons for our Awards Celebration. This is for all JV and Varsity athletes who finished the season with us and their families. Click here for details. (This is the last day to turn in your uniform before so bring it along)

State Meet Results and Photos: Day 1

Day 1 of the 2013 State Meet started off with a bang for HRHS Track. Three field event competitors and our Girls Sprint Medley Relay started first thing at 8:30 a.m.

Congratulations to:

Trevor Rex whose 6' 5" high jump took 3rd place.

CC Morgan, whose long jump of 17'4.5 inches earned 8th place and a spot on the podium.

Chuck Puga, whose PR discus throw of 141' 9" moved him up 7 places -- he was seeded 18th and finished 11th.

Our Girls Sprint Medley Relay (Alanes Dynes, Aaliyah Shumpert, Shayli Siegfreid, Macy Kreutz) finished 10th in the prelims, only one spot away from qualifying for finals, with a time of 1:50.83

Just after 9:30, our Boys 4x200 Meter Relay (Jason Phou, Eric Dynes, Josh Kolber, Jalen Kittrell) ran a prelim time of 1:29.4, which qualified them for tomorrow's finals.

By 11 am, Macy Kreutz was running her second 400 meters of the morning. Her 57.89 put her in 12th in the prelims. It's a tough year to run the 400 meters in Colorado. There are a lot of very fast girls, and in many of the last several years, Macy's time would have qualified for finals.

And all of that happened before noon!

Afternoon events for HRHS included the Paralympic 100 meters and the Boys Long Jump.

Congratulations to:

Andrew Bauer who set a new PR of 21.56 in the Paralympic 100 meters......

.....and won a medal to show for it!

Ben Morgan whose PR-tying long jump of 21' 4" earned him 6th place

Connor Turnage who took 2nd with a jump of 22' 3"

We took several versions of this podium shot. It's not every State Meet you have two athletes from the same team on the podium together for one event! There are a lot more pictures of Day 1. Click here to see them all.

On Day 1, our athletes came out to compete! After scoring 6 events, HRHS Boys were in 1st place in the team scoring at the end of Day 1. We can't wait to see what all our athletes bring to the track on Day 2. Friday's schedule is listed below.

Preliminary State Qualifiers and Meet Schedule

Frosh/Soph Results Posted!

We've waited nearly a week for these results to be posted, and finally they are available. We're told the delay was due to a family medical emergency for one of the Regis coaches, so it's totally understandable. But we're so excited to finally be able to share the results!!

One of the big reasons for all the excitement is that this is the first time some of our athletes who usually compete on JV had a chance to get their events listed on MileSplit. For many, this was the beginning of their track "transcript."

Click here for complete meet results.

Click here to see season's bests for our team.

Click here and enter a name in the search box (far right on blue menu bar) to find an individual's personal page on MileSplit.

Enjoy!

This Week in Track: May 9-11

We're nearing the finish line. This weekend's Continental Conference Championship will be the last meet of the season for our varsity team as a whole. After this meet, there is only the State Championship May 16-18 for those athletes who qualify.

The Conference Championship happens on Thursday and Saturday May 9 & 11 (there is no competition on Friday) Click here for a complete schedule. Athletes should arrive at Sports Authority one hour before the meet begins on each day they are competing.

Friday, May 10 @ 6 pm is our last team dinner for 2013 at 7948 Trotter Lane in Lone Tree. Even though JV athletes are no longer practicing, they are welcome to attend the team dinner, and we hope to see them there.

HRHS State Hopefuls 2013

We're down to two meets left in the 2013 track season -- this weekend's Continental Conference Championship and next weekend's Colorado State Meet. With one more qualifying meet left in the season (our Conference Championship), here are your Falcon State Hopefuls for 2013 (athletes with marks that place them in the Top 25 in their events among 5A competitors)

The top 18 athletes in each division qualify for the state meet so we'll be cheering for as many of these athletes as possible to move into or stay in the Top 18 this week. (Check out our FAQ's article  if you have questions about the state qualifying process.)

Best of luck to all our athletes competing this week as they strive to earn new personal bests and state meet berths!

Pictures and Kudos for HRHS Memorial

We have pictures from the HRHS Memorial posted now thanks to Friend of HRHS Track, Shannon Martinez. She shot for our team while all our regular photographers were busy making the meet run. Thank you, Shannon, and come back any time! We love your eye! Click here for photos.

Also, we got this comment in an email from a coach whose team attended our meet last weekend. Thanks to everyone who made this kind of experience possible for the teams we hosted!

Coach, I wanted to let you know I thought you guys did a great job at the meet on Saturday. I have only been coaching track in CO for 4 years most of my time is from my home state of Louisiana. But I gotta say that was the most efficiently run meet I have been to in my time here. Nice Work, good luck for the rest of the season.

Thank you and Congratulations!

THANK YOU!

A thousand thanks to all the coaches, volunteers, and athletes who made our 3rd Annual Highlands Ranch Memorial Meet a great success this weekend.

  • We had some of the best weather of the season.
  • We ran well ahead of schedule.
  • We left the stadium spotlessly clean.
  • We raised $407.26 through our $1 per ticket donation and donation jar at the concessions stand to benefit the Richard Family Fund.
And we couldn't have made it all happen without everyone's help! Go Falcons!

We appreciate everyone's efforts and send special shout outs to:

  • The Hancock, Rome, and Meis Families who hosted and co-hosted Friday's team dinner
  • Our JV meet helpers who did everything they were asked and more
  • Gigi Rex, who did the design and layout for our meet program
  • Lori Schofield, who recruited and organized all our volunteers
  • Trish Kreutz, who planned, shopped, and coordinated lunch for coaches and volunteers (we're a crew that runs on our stomachs!)
  • Shin Chen and Mandi Bauer, our concessions managers (ditto that thing about our stomachs)
  • Jim Kientz, Booster Club alumnus extraordinaire, who helped make everything run on very short notice

CONGRATULATIONS!

Highlands Ranch won 1st place team trophies for both boys and girls! We saw lots of PR's (click here for complete results) and three HRHS athletes set new meet records and earned MileSplit's National Silver Standard:

  • Macy Kreutz in the 800 with a time of 2:18.69
  • Trevor Rex in the High Jump with 6'7"
  • Connor Turnage in Triple Jump with 47'3"

We did have a photographer for part of this week's meet, but photos have not yet been posted. We'll let you know when they are available.

WHAT'S NEXT?

JV athletes are done competing, but we have Team Pictures and a small celebration planned for them on Tuesday, May 7.

We're down to two meets left in the season -- Conference Championship on Thursday and Saturday this week and the State Meet May 16-18. Stay tuned this week for a State Meet preview, with information on HRHS's State Meet hopefuls and where they stand in the rankings with only one more qualifying meet remaining.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our End of Year Team Celebration on May 19 @ 4pm -- this is for JV and Varsity athletes -- more details to come.

Saturday Meet Details: Attention Volunteers!

Only 24 hours left until the HRHS Memorial Invitational (click here for this year's cause). We've communicated a lot this week so here's what you need to know for the next 24 hours:

Friday @ 6pm: Team Dinner @ Jordan Ochs' house -- 10078 Brisbane Way

Saturday (in chronological order)

  • 7 a.m. -- Coaches will arrive at Sports Authority to set up the track. Parents, if you're an early bird, come out and help. We'll have bagels and coffee. And we'll let you drive the Gator.
  • 8:30 a.m. -- Volunteers check-in at garages. If you are a parent volunteer, please click here to double check your assignment. There are a few spaces left for anyone who wants to join the fun. JV Athletes have their assignments and also need to report by 8:30 a.m.  All volunteers should enter at the lower gate (near the smaller parking lot you come to first when you're driving to the stadium). We will have a list there with your name on it so that you do not have to pay admission. (If your volunteer shift starts later in the day, you still need to come to the lower gate for admission, then go directly to your assigned area). WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!
  • 9:15 - 3:00 or 4:00 -- We will run the best meet of the season and leave the stadium spotless when we're done. Go Falcons!
  • Post-meet Parent Party @ On the Rox (SE of I25 on Lincoln)

Results have not been posted yet for Thursday's Frosh/Soph Conference Championship. We'll keep watching and share those when they are available. See you Saturday!

Extending Our Sympathies

Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Sandy Padjen, whose father, Bill Anderson, passed away this week. She has already traveled to Lansing, Illinois to be with family and make funeral arrangements. Coach John Padjen will join her on Friday. They will both return on Sunday or Monday.

If you would like to extend your sympathies to the Padjens, cards can be sent to:

John & Sandy Padjen
Highlands Ranch High School
9375 S. Cresthill Ln.
Highlands Ranch CO 80130

Coach John Padjen is working to finalize details for this weekend's meet before he leaves on Friday, and the rest of our coaching staff will be adjusting assignments to ensure that our meet runs as smoothly as possible on Saturday. We appreciate any flexibility and additional assistance parents might be able to offer on Saturday.
