2015 Spring Break Meet in Arizona!

This year, HRHS Track's varsity athletes will have the opportunity to travel and compete at the 75th Annual Chandler Rotary Invitational on March 20-21 (first weekend of Spring Break). This meet is held in Chandler, Arizona, which is part of metro Phoenix.

Some of the best high school athletes in the nation come to Chandler Rotary each year, and the meet is unique because competition happens at three levels -- an Elite Division and a Seeded Division (both with minimum qualifying marks) and an Open Division where all other athletes and relay teams can compete. This means that all of our athletes who go on the trip are guaranteed an opportunity to compete in their events at the level that is right for them!

We're still finalizing details on travel but anticipate leaving on Thursday, March 19 and returning on Sunday, March 22 with athletes competing on March 20-21. Anticipated cost to participate is $550.

UPDATE 12/14:  Airfare has now been purchased and cost is $575 per athlete.

If you're interested in going, let Coach Padjen know now. And start your fundraising now too! King Soopers cards are the easiest way to raise funds for your trip. Click here to see how they work. To get a card for your family (or 2 or 3 or more to share with family and friends who want to help you with fundraising) click here to email Jill Krusoe.

If you plan to compete at the Chandler Rotary and you are not participating in a Winter sport at HRHS, you should be working out with us in our Fall and Winter Training. Click here for details.

Click here if you don't see the video below to view the video trailer for last year's Rotary.

Fall and Winter Training Dates

As Fall sports wind down here at The Ranch, here's a reminder of our Fall and Winter Training Dates:

November 3 - December 12 on Mondays thru Thursdays @ 3:10 - 4:15 pm (location TBA watch for announcements at school)

After Winter Break, we will resume on January 7 on Mondays thru Thursdays @ 3:10 - 4:30 pm (meet at the Commons)

Fall and Winter training have made a huge difference to the success of our team in past years. If you are not participating in a Winter sport and you plan to run track in the Spring, you should be training with us! Last year we had 21 athletes qualify for the State meet, and 18 of them won medals. The work we put in during Fall and Winter pays off in those kinds of results in the Spring. BE THERE!!

Distance Meeting November 5

Calling all distance runners! If you are interested in running distance for HRHS Track this season (800, 1600, 3200), come to a meeting with Coach Padjen on Wednesday, November 5 at 3 pm in Post-Grad.

Fall Training Starts September 2

HRHS Track will start our Off-Season Fall Training on Tuesday, September 2

  • Workouts are 3:10 - 4:15 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during Sept. 2 - Oct. 24
  • Meet in the Weight Room at 3:10 pm on workout days
For our athletes who aren't participating in Fall sports, Fall training makes a BIG difference in the performances we achieve once track season starts. BE THERE for Fall Training and bring a friend! There is no cost for this off-season program.

Great Sprinting: Nature or Nurture?

It's a mistake to think that great sprinters are simply born to run fast. Experts in the science of speed say things like this:
  • Sprinting is a skill  ~ Loren Seagrave
  • Sprinting fast is an unnatural activity ~ Dr. Ralph Mann
There's a method to the madness of the drills and strength development we incorporate into Fall Training, Winter Training, and the competition season -- all aimed at developing the skills related to speed and making it easier and more natural for our athletes to run fast.

Check out this slideshow for a quick primer on the Science of Speed and the video below it on the Science of Running Faster.

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

The school year and track season have ended, and for the summer, we'll send out email updates very infrequently. It's possible email updates will relay multiple website posts (like this one does), so scroll through to make sure you don't miss anything.

Many of our athletes have graduated, and some may have decided to move on to other activities. But we don't want to make any assumptions about whether you want to stay connected to information from HRHS Track.

Maybe you have younger kids coming up.

Or maybe you just love keeping up with what's going on with the program.

So we don't delete any emails from our list when the season and school year end.

If you decide to unsubscribe, we will, of course, miss you, BUT we understand and won't have our feelings hurt. You don't have to decide today (breaking up is sometimes hard to do). There's an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email we send out.

Have a GREAT summer!

Training to Win in 2015 Starts NOW!

Today was the beginning of our summer training for ALL our returning athletes. If you missed it, be sure to come tomorrow! Here's what our returning HRHS Track athletes get in our summer program:

  • Individualized Training Plan for the entire summer
  • Speed/Athletic Development Camp during June -- These drills and exercises will improve agility, quickness, running form, power and core strength.

All our returning athletes need to be part of this summer training program. In 2014, HRHS Track graduated a lot of seniors. Getting our team ready for 2015 starts NOW, and the athletes who participate in our summer program will be way ahead of the game in preparing to compete and win next year.

Varsity Conference 2014 Moved to Friday/Saturday

PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR THE CORRECT TIME SCHEDULE.

Thursdays haven't been good to us in recent years. This is what Thursday looked like at last year's 2013 Conference Meet. With hail covering the track and infield, we gave up, went home, and tried again on Friday.

With rain and cold in the forecast for Thursday, this year's meet organizers have opted to give our athletes the best possible weather for competition (and state qualifying marks) by moving Thursday's scheduled events to Friday.

The start time for Friday has not yet been determined. HRHS has requested a later start time to accommodate our athletes taking AP tests that day. We expect a start time to be announced by tomorrow morning so please watch for more details to come.

Team Dinner will still happen Friday night, but the start time will change based on the start time for Friday's events.

Once again, our plans for a team picture are thwarted. We will plan on a team picture and uniform turn-in for all athletes not competing at State on Monday after school.

Stay tuned for details on times. We'll share the news as soon as we get it.

We're down to two meets left in the 2014 track season -- this weekend's Continental Conference Championship and next weekend's Colorado State Meet. With one more qualifying meet left in the season (our Conference Championship), here are your Falcon State Hopefuls for 2014 (athletes with marks that place them in the Top 25 in their events among 5A competitors).

The top 18 athletes in each division qualify for the state meet so we'll be cheering for as many of these athletes as possible to move into or stay in the Top 18 this week. Check out our FAQ's article if you have questions about the state qualifying process. Click here for the 3-day State Meet Schedule. Look under "Useful Links" on our website to see complete Leaderboards.

Best of luck to all our athletes competing this week as they strive to earn new personal bests and state meet berths!

This Week in Track: May 5-10

We're nearing the finish line. This weekend's Continental Conference Championship (on Thursday and Saturday) will be the last meet of the season for our varsity team as a whole. After this meet, there is only the State Championship (May 15-17) for those athletes who qualify (watch later this week for a State Hopefuls post).

Even though our JV is done competing, we need them on Friday for Team Pictures and our last Team Dinner (in lieu of a pizza party). They are welcome to continue practicing with us this week as well.  Here are all the details:

Thursday May 8

  • Meet begins @ 4pm 5PM @ Sports Authority. Click here for a complete CORRECTED meet schedule
  • Athletes competing on Thursday should arrive by 3pm 4PM. NO BUSES (if you need a ride, coordinate with coaches)

  • NOTE: HRHS Undergrad Awards Night is Thursday. If you have been invited, please know that Coach Padjen will coordinate with administrators and teachers to make sure nothing pertaining to your award nomination happens before you get there!

THANK YOU from Coach Padjen

I would like to personally thank every parent and track athlete who contributed to make the HRHS Memorial Invitational such a huge success. We have a tremendous group of parents who joined forces to make this one of the top meets in Colorado!

An extra special thanks go to Kim Turnage, Gigi Rex, Lori Roby, Jill Krusoe, Trish Kreutz, and Mandy Bauer for going way beyond what was asked for in helping to make Saturday such a rewarding experience for our team!!!!

And to all the parents who helped with shot put, discus, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, high jump, hurdles, relay exchanges, white flag, wind gauges, food for coaches/workers/officials, awards, clerking the course (a special thanks to Marie McClanahan for her being the best field clerk in the land!), clean-up, concessions and all other volunteering duties, THANK YOU!!!!!!

So many of the visiting coaches were in awe of our parents, their support, and how unified/supportive/friendly our team and parents were. Again, thank you!!!!!!!

In the Books: HRHS Memorial 2014

THANK YOU!

A thousand thanks to all the coaches, volunteers, and athletes who made our 4th Annual Highlands Ranch Memorial Meet a great success this weekend.

  • We had some of the best weather of the season
  • We ran well ahead of schedule
  • We left the stadium spotlessly clean
  • We raised awareness and funds for the Second Wind Fund in memory of Arapahoe High School Student Claire Davis

And we couldn't have made it all happen without everyone's help! Go Falcons!  We appreciate everyone's efforts and send special shout outs to these folks (and beg forgiveness for any we miss!):

  • All the parent volunteers who helped in countless ways and kept asking how else they could help throughout the day. We can't name them all, but click here to see who they were.
  • Our JV meet helpers who did everything they were asked and more
  • Shelby Kasch who not only ran but also sang an awesome National Anthem to kick off our day
  • Lori Schofield, who recruited and organized all our volunteers
  • Trish Kreutz, who planned, shopped, and coordinated lunch for coaches and volunteers and Jill Krusoe, who helped set up, serve, and clean up (we're a crew that runs on our stomachs!)
  • Corner Bakery and Qdoba, who donated food for coaches and volunteers and Road Runner Sports who sponsored our meet with a cash donation to our program
  • Mandi Bauer, Gigi Rex and Janice Hapgood (HRHS Counseling Secretary), who were our concessions managers,  and Coach Trautman (HRHS Football), who was one of our Grill Masters (ditto that thing about our stomachs)
  • Marie McClanahan (HRHS staff member) who kept competitors and events moving as our Clerk of the Course for most of the day
  • Sue Dakovich (Athletic Secretary) and Doylene Gorham (Bookkeeper), who organized student volunteers and managed our gate
  • HRHS Booster alumni Jim Kientz and Curtis Fulton who helped make the morning (especially hurdles set up) run smoothly

CONGRATULATIONS!

At the 2014 HRHS Memorial, we saw lots of PR's (click here for complete results), and HRHS set new meet records in 3 events. All three of these marks are also new All-Time HRHS Records (note: all records are updated at the end of each season):
  • High Jump -- Trevor Rex -- 6'10"
  • Boys 4x100 -- Ben Morgan, Connor Turnage, Eric Dynes, Jalen Kittrell -- 42.21
  • Girls 4x100 -- Alanes Dynes, Shayli Siegfreid, CC Morgan, Taylor Schofield -- 48.68
Our meet produced a total of 16 elite performances. HRHS performances that acheived the National Silver Standard included:
  • Morgan Krusoe -- 300 meter hurdles
  • Macy Kreutz -- 400 meters
  • CC Morgan -- Long Jump
  • Trevor Rex -- High Jump
  • Boys 4x100 Relay
Also of special note, our Girls 800 Sprint Medley Relay is now ranked #15 nationwide with their time from this week of 1:47.15 (new #2 on the HRHS All-Time Records list).
Thanks to HRHS parent, Scott Kasch who took all our photos this week! Click here to check them out.

Coach Versaw, webmaster extraordinaire for ColoradoTrackXC was on hand with his team (The Classical Academy) and provided a great array of photos (free content) as well as a nice write-up of the meet (subscription only content). WHAT'S NEXT?

JV athletes are done competing, but we have awards for last week's Frosh/Soph Conference Meet and a pizza party for all JV athletes at practice this week.

We're down to two meets left in the season -- Conference Championship on Thursday and Saturday this week and the State Meet May 15-17. Stay tuned this week for a State Meet preview, with information on HRHS's State Meet hopefuls and where they stand in the rankings with only one more qualifying meet remaining.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our End of Year Team Celebration on Sunday, May 18 @ 4pm -- this is for JV and Varsity athletes -- more details to come.

Saturday Meet Details: Attention Volunteers!

Only 24 hours left until the HRHS Memorial Invitational benefitting Second Wind Fund in memory of Claire Davis. We've communicated a lot this week so here's what you need to know for the next 24 hours:

Saturday (in chronological order)

  • 7 a.m. -- Coaches will be at Sports Authority setting up the track. Parents, if you're an early bird, come out and help. We'll have bagels and coffee. And we'll let you drive the Gator.
  • 8:15 a.m. -- All athletes should arrive at the stadium. No buses. Click here for schedule.
  • 8:30 a.m. -- Volunteers check-in at garages. If you are a parent volunteer, please click here to double check your assignment. There are a few spaces left for anyone who wants to join the fun. JV Athletes have their assignments and need to report by 8:30 a.m. and stay until the end of the meet.  All volunteers should enter at the lower gate (near the smaller parking lot you come to first when you're driving to the stadium). We will have a list there with your name on it so that you do not have to pay admission. (If your volunteer shift starts later in the day, you still need to come to the lower gate for admission, then go directly to your assigned area). WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!
  • 9:15 - 3:00 or 4:00 -- We will run the best meet of the season and leave the stadium spotless when we're done. Go Falcons!
  • Post-meet Parent and Coaches Only Party @ On the Rox (SE of I25 on Lincoln)

Frosh/Soph Conference Results

It took a while, but the results have been posted. Our athletes braved cold, windy conditions to put their best on the track on Wednesday. For reference, trailing winds of +2.0 meter/second are considered to be too much of an advantage for marks to count for state qualifying. Our athletes were running into headwinds of up to -7.8 m/s on Wednesday night. It was windy, and in almost every instance the wind was not in our favor!

Complete results are posted here for both boys and girls. Here are our place-winners and scorers from the meet. Congratulations to them and to all our competitors!

Girls:

Shot Put -- Ashley Licht -- 3rd -- 30'5"
4x100 -- 7th -- 57.68

Boys:

Triple Jump -- Eric Krauss -- 1st -- 40'5"
Triple Jump -- Matt LaCroix -- 8th -- 35'2"
Long Jump -- Eric Krauss -- 6th -- 18'3"

Discus -- Brandon Jordahl -- 5th -- 110'2"
800 meters -- Kaden Lathrop -- 3rd -- 2:08.07
110 Hurdles -- Derrick D'Agostino -- 5th -- 19.02
110 Hurdles -- Richard Kepfer -- 6th -- 19.06

Our Multiple Talents

We are a multi-talented team!

Congratulations to our Girls Track & Field Team whose cumulative GPA of 3.56  has qualified them for the CHSAA Academic Team Championship Award. We are proud of the way these athletes excel both in the classrooom and on the field of competition.

A number of our HRHS Track athletes are also artists and/or musicians. Below are images of some of them and their work captured at the Arts Alive Carnival at HRHS on Tuesday night. Apologies to those of you I missed.

Good luck to all our Frosh/Soph competitors and coaches at Wednesday's meet and to all our competitors, coaches and parent volunteers at Saturday's HRHS Memorial Meet!

Team Pictures: Take 2

Our previous attempt to take team pictures was sidelined by another team taking the field early. We chose a practice over a photo shoot that day, but tomorrow (Tuesday 4/29) we plan to get the team photo at the beginning of practice. Wear your uniform to practice. And be sure to bring some sweats for after the photo because it's supposed to be another chilly day for practice.

Making the HRHS Memorial Great

The HRHS Memorial, now in its fourth year, was designed to provide a tremendous meet for our athletes while also providing an opportunity to give back to our community. The first meet honored HRHS's legendary shot put coach, Ron Hambric, whom we lost the previous season. This year, we are dedicating the meet in the memory of Claire Davis, the Arapahoe student who was tragically taken from us this past winter, and our athletes will be selling pink shoelaces in her honor with the proceeds going to The Second Wind Fund, which provides free mental health care for students in our community. We would like to thank everyone for their support with this meet and for supporting The Second Wind Fund in honor of Claire Davis.

Not only does our meet serve a great cause, but coaches from other teams consistently say it's the most well-run meet they attend each season, and we need all hands on deck (and feet on the track) to keep that reputation alive. Here's a note we got from a coach after last year's meet:
Coach, I wanted to let you know I thought you guys did a great job at the meet on Saturday. I have only been coaching track in CO for 4 years most of my time is from my home state of Louisiana. But I gotta say that was the most efficiently run meet I have been to in my time here. Nice Work, good luck for the rest of the season.
We can only run a meet that great with LOTS of parent participation!
  • Our greatest needs are on wind gauges (this is one of the few positions where you'll be sitting rather than standing) and concessions (this is one of the few positions where shade is a sure thing)including Grill Masters .
  • Volunteers get free meet admission, lunch and our eternal thanks!
  • We will have a black canopy set up near the finish line where HRHS parents and supporters can hang out when they are not busy volunteering. Look for it and spend some time getting to know other parents at the meet!
  • If you can't be at the track on Saturday, you can still help! We need donations of 7 cases of water and 12 dozen cookies/brownies/cupcakes for our Coach/Volunteer Lunch. Please email Trish Kreutz before Thursday if you can donate a case of water or a dozen cookies/brownies/cupcakes.
Join us after the meet for a Parents and Coaches Only Party at On the Rox (on Lincoln SE of I-25).

This Week in Track: 4/28 - 5/3

Here are all the details on this week; please read all the way to the end -- lots of info about our meet (including a parent party afterward) so don't miss any of it.

Wednesday 4/30 -- Frosh/Soph Conference Championship @ Sports Authority @ 3pm
  • Bus to the meet leaves HRHS @ 1:30 pm; there is no bus back -- please make arrangements for athletes to be picked up at the stadium at the end of the meet
  • This meet is only for freshmen and sophomores
  • We are allowed to enter 4 individuals and 1 relay per event
  • Events are electronically timed (all JV meets have been hand timed), and this meet is a state qualifier. Results will be available online, and we'll send out a link when they are posted.
  • Each school is responsible for providing officials for one event. HRHS has been assigned to Long Jump. No experience required. We'll teach you everything you need to know. This is a great way to get close to the action! Click here to email Coach Padjen to say you'll help.

Saturday 5/3 -- HRHS Memorial Invitational @ Sports Authority
  • No bus.  Athletes need to arrive by 8:15am. Scroll down for meet schedule
  • We still need volunteers. If you've been waiting until we really needed you to volunteer, now is the time! We especially need help on wind gauges (sitting!) and in concessions (shade!)Click here to sign yourself up for an open slot. Volunteers get free meet admission, lunch, and our eternal thanks.
  • We need donations of cases of bottled water and about 12 dozen cookies/brownies/cupcakes for our coaches/volunteers lunch. Please email Trish Kreutz before Thursday if you can donate a case of water or a dozen cookies, brownies or cupcakes.
  • All JV athletes are required to be at the meet from start to finish -- they will each be assigned to jobs that make everything run more smoothly. JV athletes, please remember that the Varsity athletes have made 2 meets run for you at HRHS this year. This is your chance to give back AND see what you have to look forward to in varsity meets.
  • We will have a black canopy set up near the finish line where HRHS parents and supporters can hang out when they are not busy volunteering. Look for it and spend some time getting to know other parents at the meet!
