This Week in Track: May 1-4

Last week's 3 meets and a team dinner over 4 days may have set a record for our program. This week is a little lighter with only 2 meets and a team dinner over 4 days. It's a big week for our team because we are hosting Saturday's meet at Sports Authority Stadium. Coaches from the teams that attend consistently say our meet is the most well-run meet they attend each season, and we need all hands on deck to keep that reputation alive.

Here are all the details on this week; please read all the way to the end -- lots of info about our meet (including a parent party afterward) so don't miss any of it.

Thursday -- Frosh/Soph Conference Championship @ Regis @ 3pm

  • Bus leaves HRHS @ 1:30 pm
  • This meet is only for freshmen and sophomores
  • We are allowed to enter only 3 individuals and 1 relay per event
  • Events are electronically timed (all JV meets have been hand timed), and a state qualifier
  • Results will be available online on Friday -- we'll send you a link!

Friday @ 6pm -- Team Dinner @ Jordan Ochs' house -- 10078 Brisbane Way

Saturday -- HRHS Memorial Invitational @ Sports Authority @ 9:30 am
  • No bus; Athletes need to arrive by 8:15; Scroll down for meet schedule
  • We still need volunteers. If you've been waiting until we really needed you to volunteer, now is the time! We especially need help in the discus and on wind gauges. Click here to sign yourself up for an open slot. Volunteers get free meet admission, lunch, and our eternal thanks.
  • We need donations of cases of bottled water and about 12 dozen cookies/brownies for our coaches/volunteers lunch. Please email Trish Kreutz before Thursday if you can donate a case of water or a dozen cookies or brownies.
  • All JV athletes are required to be at the meet from start to finish -- they will each be assigned to jobs that make everything run more smoothly. JV athletes, please remember that the Varsity athletes have made 3 meets run for you at HRHS this year. This is your chance to give back AND see what you have to look forward to in varsity meets.
  • Party For Parents Only at On the Rox (SE of I-25 on Lincoln) after the meet.

Highlands Ranch High School Memorial Invitational

Now in its third year, the Highlands Ranch High School Memorial Invitational has been dedicated each year to a member of the track and field community who is no longer with us. This year, we follow the lead of Dakota Ridge High School to extend the memorial outside the borders of our state and raise funds for victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Martin Richard, an 8 year old spectator at the Boston Marathon, lost his life in the bombing while his mother and younger sister were both critically injured. The Highlands Ranch High School Track Boosters and HRHS athletic administration have agreed to price tickets at $6 for adults and $4 for students, with $1 of every ticket going to the Richard Family Fund. Meet programs will be provided free of charge. There will also be donation jars at the concession stand for those who would like to donate additional money toward the cause.

Liberty Bell 2013 Results

If you came out for the Liberty Bell this weekend, you saw some of the best track and field performances in the state -- and even in the nation -- so far this year. This meet hosted over 60 teams, and the weather finally cooperated to help Colorado athletes achieve top performances.

Normally, we have so many athletes placing in events that we don't list individual placers, but this meet is huge so congratulations to all our athletes who competed and especially to those below, who placed or nearly placed in their events (click here for full results):

Skip Cooking Tonight

What would you do with an extra hour? You can have one if you skip cooking tonight!

Bring the whole family to our Team Dinner Fundraiser at CiCi's Pizza on Thursday 4/25.

Starting at around 6pm, after our JV Conference Championship, Cici's (near University & Dry Creek) will have lots of tables reserved for our group. Grab a flyer at the door when you come in and present it when you purchase your meals.  CiCi's will donate a portion of the proceeds to HRHS Track.

Invite friends and family. Let's all skip cooking tonight, and pack the house at CiCi's!

May 3 and May 10 are our final two team dinners for the season. We have host homes for both but have room for additional co-hosts at both dinners. This is a great way for parents to get to know each other and more of the kids on our team. Co-hosts usually bring a salad, bread, or dessert and help with setup, serving and clean up. If you can help co-host a dinner on either May 3 or May 10, email Lori Schofield to get connected with your dinner host.

Horizon Invite Results and Photos

Wednesday was everything track season is supposed to be...sunshine, blue skies, moderate temperatures and lots of PR's.

HRHS Boys and Girls teams both won first place out of the 8 schools competing at Horizon. Click here for complete meet results. You can view the Horizon meet photos here. (Even more pictures to choose from for your athlete recognition ad!)

We're short on practice and long on meets this week.
  • JV competes at home Thursday @ 3:45 for our JV Conference Championship.
  • Come to CiCi's Pizza after the meet Thursday for our Team Dinner Fundraiser.
  • Friday and Saturday our Varsity will be back in action at the Liberty Bell Invitational.

JV CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP - THURSDAY APRIL 25

The JV Conference Championship has been moved to Thursday 4/25 @ HRHS @ 3:45.

Wednesday's practice is very important for JV athletes!!! This is the last practice before the biggest meet of our JV season!

Varsity athletes need to be on the track by 3:10 on Thursday for a short practice and need to stay for the entirety of the meet to help officiate field events, time races, move blocks and hurdles, etc. Parent volunteers are also welcome and appreciated. It's a great chance to get closer to the action, parents! Reply to this email if you would like to help with an event.

All athletes, their families and friends are invited to CiCi's Pizza near University & Dry Creek for our Team Dinner Fundraiser Thursday night starting around 6:00-6:30, right after our meet. Grab a flyer at the door, present it at checkout, and CiCi's will donate a portion of proceeds to HRHS Track.

Additional Info for Today's Horizon Meet

Athletes and parents, this information from the Horizon coach may be helpful to you as you prepare for today's meet.

The track is clear, but be prepared to warm up in trainers on sidewalks, as the grass is really wet. Anyone helping with the throwing events (or throwers for that matter) should consider wearing shoes that you don't mind getting wet or muddy. Also, bring towels to wipe and dry off implements.

We're thinking towels and extra socks might be a good suggestion for everyone! Click here for a printable meet schedule. Click here for printable heat sheets. See you out at the track this afternoon!

Two Saturdays to Go....

With snow outside, May seems pretty far away, but we're only a couple of Saturdays away from the HRHS Memorial Invite on May 4. We need all hands on deck (and all feet on the track) to live up to the great reputation our meet has garnered among coaches and athletes since we started it in 2011. Here's how you can help:

(before you read on, be sure you read all the way to the end for a special offer)

Click here to sign yourself up as a volunteer for May 4. There's something for everyone, whether you like being in the sun or shade, right down on the track or behind the scenes. Questions? Send an email to hrhstrack@gmail.com for answers.

Buy or Sell an Ad
This meet is our only fundraiser of the year, and one of the primary ways we raise funds is through ads for our meet program. Our goal is to raise $5,000, which is totally doable if each of our more than 100 athletes sells just one ad. But it will take all of us to reach our goal!

Together Everyone Achieves More

Click here for a Fundraiser Information Sheet you can use when you ask people to place an ad in our program. Remember we have both business ads and personal recognition ads in 1/4, 1/2 and full page sizes. (Please note: We've had requests for full-page athlete recognition ads, and those can be purchased at the business ad price of $100.)

Recognition ads for your athlete couldn't be easier! Choose a photo you like from any of these albums and design your own ad ......... OR ............

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS LIMITED TIME OFFER
  1. Pick a picture
  2. Pay for your ad online ($100 full page, $30 half page, $20 quarter page)
  3. email the picture and text for your ad to hrhstrack@gmail.com  by April 22
  4. We will design your ad for you (we designed the "Dedication and Commitment" ad below) and send it back for your approval.

Here are just a few of the ads we've already received (actual ads will print in black and white).

Schedule Updates for This Week

Welcome to Spring in Colorado!

Because we're scheduled to get 3-5 inches of snow during the next 24 hours, the Horizon Invite originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 17 has been postponed one week and will be held on Wednesday, April 24.

This week's JV Meet at Regis is still on as scheduled. The meet will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19. Athletes need to ride the bus to and from the meet.

Varsity will practice on Friday at the regular time and take the weekend off.

Meet Results & Photos: April 11-13

Another week of HRHS Track and Field 2013 is in the books.

  • On Thursday, our JV competed at Rock Canyon.
  • Thanks to all the parents who were part of our Coaches-Parents Party on Friday evening!
  • Saturday morning came early and cold as our varsity athletes boarded the bus at 6:45 a.m. headed for Regis. Our coaches will need to buy a few extra boxes of Capri Sun this week...the performances warmed up with the weather and lots of PR's were happening on Saturday. Like last week, both our boys and girls did well in the team scoring, with the boys placing 3rd (out of 15 teams) and girls placing 2nd (out of 17 teams). Click here for photos and here for complete results.
The weather could play havoc with our practice and meet schedules this week. Currently, our varsity is scheduled for the Horizon Invite on Wednesday 4/17 and JV is scheduled for Regis on Friday 4/19. As always, we will pass along information about any weather-related schedule changes as soon as it becomes available.

April 5-6 Meet Results and New Date for Parents/Coaches Social

We had perfect weather for both our meets this weekend!

On Friday, our JV competed at home against Legend and Littleton. Thanks to our team's Student Manager, Katie Demchak, we got tons of photos at the JV meet. Click here to see them.

Friday night, there was a great turnout for the team dinner after the meet. Thanks to Rick and Kim Turnage, Lori Schofield, Bob Schofield, Jill Krusoe, and Chris Goldsberry for making the dinner happen. Our kids went through 7 pounds of pasta, 7 pounds of meatballs, 240 ounces of spaghetti sauce plus all the salad, bread and cookies they could eat! And there was nothing but a little salad dressing left at the end.

Very early Saturday morning, our Varsity boys and girls teams boarded a bus for a cross-town ride to compete at the Mustang Invitational.

  • In the team scoring, HRHS Girls won 1st place, outscoring 13 other girls' teams. HRHS Boys placed 2nd out of 15 boys' teams in the team scoring! Click here for complete meet results.
  • Lori Schofield, Jason Phou and a variety of athletes passed the camera around to get our photos at this week's meet. Thanks to all who made that happen (especially if we didn't mention your name)! Click here for meet photos.

We have rescheduled our Parents/Coaches Social for this Friday, April 12 @ 7 - 10 p.m.  It's a great way for parents to connect with each other and with coaches. Bring something to share (appetizer, dessert, or a beverage of your choice) and come just for an hour or for the whole evening. (Kim and Rick Turnage are hosting at 8656 Forrest Drive. Click here for map.)

3 Track Things: Austin Pictures, Ads, and Upcoming Events

#1 Austin Pictures

Last week, 21 HRHS Track athletes, 5 coaches, and a few parents headed to Austin for two track meets, the South Austin Relays on Thursday and the Texas Relays on Friday and Saturday. We saw some of the best track and field in the nation at the Texas Relays as we watched 4 men run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds -- one clocking the fastest time in the U.S. this year. Click here for photos of our athletes in action.

#2 Ads

This week kicks off our only team fundraiser for the season -- filling the meet program for our Highlands Ranch Memorial Invitational track meet (May 4) with business and athlete recognition ads. Our goal is to raise $5,000. With just over 100 athletes on our team, that averages out to about $50 in ad sales per family. (See the form below for details on ad sizes and costs.) All we need is for each family to sell one or two ads, and we will reach our goal. Create a recognition ad for your son or daughter (or ask grandmas and grandpas if they want to), advertise your own business, or ask your dentist, doctor, plumber, orthodontist, hairdresser, insurance agent, realtor, music teacher, painter....you can probably think of even more. The form below is all you need. (Click here for a printable version.)

The Highlands Ranch Memorial Invitational, scheduled for May 4, is one of the last state qualifying meets in Colorado. HRHS puts on an outstanding meet, drawing teams and spectators from the metro area and beyond. Meet programs will be provided free of charge to spectators, and our athletes will all receive one at our season-ending Awards Celebration as a keepsake. In addition to placing the printed ad in our program, we will mention businesses that advertise in our program by name over the P.A. system multiple times during the course of our meet.

#3  Mark Your Calendar for these upcoming events:
April 5  (more details coming out this week)
3:30 JV Meet @ HRHS
6:30 Team Dinner @ Turnage's
April 6  (more details coming out this week)
Varsity @ Mustang Invite (Adams 12 North)
April 19
7:00 p.m. Parent Social  @ Turnage's
April 25
6:00 p.m. Team Dinner @ CiCi's Pizza (invite friends and family -- a portion of proceeds benefits our team)
